One of the largest and most important cities on the very northern side of Italy, Milan is home to almost 1.5 million inhabitants and is close to the Swiss border, serving as an important gateway for the region. Standing in the very heart of central Milan, the Corso Vittorio Emanuele is a particularly popular place to shop and connects both the Piazza Duomo and the Piazza San Babila. Milan's nearby Corso area offers an array of cinemas, bars and restaurants, while the stylish Monte Napoleone area can be found slightly to the north and features numerous fashion boutiques.

Milan's Brera quarter is a notable entertainment district, overflowing with bars, cafés and nightspots. The northern side of Milan is home to the city's working-class Paolo Sarpi region, with the vibrant Porta Ticinese district stands to the south.
